The FBI is investigating what they call an apparant, second “attempted assassination” of former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday.

On Monday, the suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was charged with two firearm offenses (possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial numbe) in federal court. If convicted on the two firearms charges, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years. Court records show more than 100 criminal counts have been filed against Routh in North Carolina.

The criminal complaint against Routh revealed Monday that his cellphone was in the same vicinity near the Trump golf course for nearly 12 hours:  “Agents requested T-Mobile, on an emergency basis, to provide law enforcement with information pertaining to ROUTH’s mobile phone usage. Those records indicated that Routh’s mobile phone was located in the vicinity of the area along the tree line described above from approximately 1:59 AM until approximately 1:31 PM, on September 15, 2024.”

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Routh was armed with an AK-47-style rifle and was allegedly 300-500 yards away from Trump at Trump International Golf Course when members of the Secret Service detail spotted him and opened fire in the direction of the rifle. Witness say they saw a man, later identified as Routh, fleeing the area of the tree line, entering a Nissan sport utility vehicle and leaving at a high rate of speed. In the area of the tree line where Routh fled, agents found a digital camera, two bags, a loaded SKS-style 7.62×39 caliber rifle with a scope, and a black plastic bag containing food. The serial number on the rifle “was obliterated and unreadable to the naked eye.”

Routh was pulled over and detained about 50 miles away after a law enforcement alert was issued for the black Nissan with the license plate number. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office shared body cam video Monday of the moment deputies arrested suspect Routh on Sunday afternoon, which shows multiple officers wearing bulletproof vests as one officer ordered the suspect to step backward with his arms raised. He was detained without incident.

Trump took to X on Monday afternoon to thank the Secret Service and local law enforcement, commending them for doing an “outstanding” job handling the potential attempt on his life. He thanked Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw by name: “I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes – It was certainly an interesting day!  Most importantly, I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!”
