St. Joseph City officials have come to a new compromise on fees at the city landfill.
Interim City Manager Clint Thompson says compromise came following a public forum earlier this month.
“And I think we’ve been able to arrive at an amount now that is a positive direction moving forward in helping the landfill be an asset in the community long-term,” Thompson tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. “But also, it was a needed increase as a result of the lack of increases for 20 plus years.”
City leaders worked extensively with a packed crowd of local waste haulers and residents to create a framework for a new three tier fee structure that will now charge most local and commercial haulers $40 a ton to dump, $20 for cars.
Interim City Manager Clint Thompson says the new rate will also aggressively crackdown on large out of town haulers
“That we see coming in from transfer stations and have increased that rate to $150 per ton,” Thompson explains.
Thompson says another thing that will be discussed is the formation of a landfill task force
“And that committee will meet in 2025 to study the long-term rate of the landfill, look at the life expectancy,” Thompson says.
The City Council will vote on the rate changes during its January 6th meeting.
